New Mexico GLBTQ Centers Director Shares Models of Hope Award
February 14, 2011 Grassroots Presss
New Mexico GLBTQ Centers Executive Director David Stocum is among the honorees at the 3rd Annual Vincent R. Johnson Models of Hope Awards presented by Pride and Equality Magazine. The award honors individuals within the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (glbtq) community that can be seen as role models to GLBTQ youth and the community itself. Recipients of this award will be honored at a dinner and silent auction on Friday, February 18, 2011 at The Albuquerque Convention Center.

The Vincent R. Johnson Models of Hope Awards are named in honor of Vince Johnson, a successful Albuquerque businessman and a proud, gay community leader. He passed away in August 2006. The awards are presented by Pride and Equality Magazine, whose mission is to portray the glbtq community in a different light. P&E decided to go with a simple approach; portray the community as regular individuals living, dying, raising families and looking toward the future in this world and showing youth it’s okay to be who they are.

“This was a big surprise, it is very humbling to be recognized for work you are passionate about,” said Stocum, continuing, “it’s just amazing that I get to spend my time doing what I feel called to do.”

New Mexico GLBTQ Centers is a statewide non-profit working to create a network of glbtq community centers across the land of enchantment. The organization currently operates the Southern New Mexico Regional GLBTQ Center at 1210 N. Main St. in Las Cruces.
